11/11/2023 0 Comments Joker and thief meaningyes, that is entirely weird, not just for the poem, but for Dylan in general. Something along those lines that I just can't seem to word right. Perhaps even this thought perhaps the thief thought himself a thief until he heard the true thievery that the joker spoke of, and the joker likewise thought of himself until he heard that others can take life itself as a joke. Kind of the joker and the thief know their bounds and what they see around them exceeds them. Probably has something to do with the kind of inverted morality taking place. Almost as if the two riders are bringing death, or at least something really really bad.Īs Tarren suggested, I also wonder if there is some kind of veiled historical reference in the song, in an American Pie sort of way, but I can't image what the reference could be.īTW, I also like the Hendix version. To me, that last verse - with the wind howling and wildcat growling - conveys a real sense of dread. What's up with the princes - do they represent the kind of rich/unappreciative people that the joker is complaining about in the 2nd verse? And who are the two riders - the joker and the thief? The first four verses more or less make sense to me.Solomon's and Tarren's interpretations both shed some light on it. What do you think the thief means by "that is not our fate?" It's not our fate to feel that life is but a joke? "The joker complains about the stealing of the businessmen, the thief of their falsehood, yet at the same time they are traits that each other holds."
